sunday morning, no. 9

Hi friends! Thank you for stopping by for the ninth post in my weekly Sunday Morning series where I share links, recipes, and thoughts from the past week.

This past month has been a whirlwind. My garden grew like crazy, I traveled to Napa for my sister’s 21st birthday, I signed up for sewing classes, I made tons of new dishes, and I’m currently putting together something super exciting to share with you all.

First, here are some photos + highlights from our trip to Napa Valley/San Francisco!

  • We drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and flew over Mount Rainier!

  • Frank walked on a west coast beach for the first time.

  • My dad treated us to an impromptu In-n-Out burger. He even insisted on buying Frank a shirt. It was too good.

  • We took a wine train through the Napa vineyards and it felt like we were in the 1920s. My sister Bella and I loved it. Still dreaming about it.

  • We stayed on Bodega Bay and Frank and I were able to explore a bit. We even found a cave! Such beauty sand and the sunset was beautiful.

Garden Update: It's been 5 weeks since planting day! I checked on it this weekend and harvested tons of radishes, turnip greens, lettuce, and mustard greens! The squash and pumpkins are flowering and I can see the carrot tops peeping up from the ground. I feel so lucky to be able to grow food from tiny seeds and learn about gardening and farming from Frank’s Uncle Tony. He knows so much!

We planted the following, and the highlighted veggies have sprouts currently and underlined veggies have been harvested: beets, broccoli, carrots, onions, radishes, turnips, cabbage, kale, bibb lettuce, black seeded simpson lettuce, spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, winter squash, and.... PUMPKIN! I'll be updating this list weekly!

What I made/ate the past few weeks:

  • So. Much. Wine. Napa did not disappoint.

  • The best breakfast at La Note, a french restaurant in Berkeley, CA. I got the Lemon Gingerbread Pancakes and Poached Pears. Incroyable.

  • Worked on some new recipes and projects, coming your way soon!

Here are a few links to things that caught my eye this month:

What I’m making/baking/eating this week:

  • White chicken chili that’s dairy-and-gluten free! So cozy. Perfect for fall.

  • I'm still going a little lighter on the meals since I haven't been feeling 100% with all my food sensitivities, so I'll be making goat yogurt, simple salads, fresh soups, fish, and green juices. All foods that help me personally heal my inflammation and feel better. I'm re-reading Josh Axe's book Eat Dirt and following his "Immune Gut" guidelines. Very interesting and helpful for me!

Other musings/updates/jountings:

  • I signed up for sewing classes and I’m so excited to learn how to sew fun things like dresses and aprons and tops, skirts, etc. Will keep you guys updated.

  • Feel free to let me know your questions in the comments, send me an email here, or DM me on Instagram, I’d be more than happy to help!

  • Just like the importance of locally-sourced and sustainable food, sustainable fashion is just as important to the environment, which is why I want to start a small part of my Sunday Mornings to showcase ‘What I Wore’ focused on outfits that are either fully or semi-thrifted or repurposed. Just something fun to start doing! I hope to update on different things I learn from sewing classes.

Be sure to follow along on Instagram. If you make any recipes, I would love to see, so feel free to tag me in your recipes posts, @marinagunnfood!

Have a great week!

xx, Marina
